Is The Gulch Walkable?

Inside the neighborhood, yes: the Gulch is compact, bounded by Broadway on the northwest, the CSX rail line on the east, and the curve of I-65 and I-40 on the south and west, and its restaurants, hotels, and music venue sit within those edges. The streets in its northern part follow a grid, while those in the south have a more organic layout (The Cultural Landscape Foundation). Getting there from the honky-tonks is a walk of roughly a mile: by road, the trip from Broadway at 5th Avenue to the Gulch measured 1.1 miles on the OSRM route planner in October 2026. The edges are the limit: the interstates on the south and west mark where the walkable core ends.

Getting Around

Trip How it works
Within the Gulch the restaurants in The Infatuation's Gulch guide sit on a handful of streets, among them 8th Avenue South, Division Street, 12th Avenue South, Magazine Street, and Gleaves Street
Broadway to the Gulch about 1.1 miles by road from Broadway at 5th Avenue (OSRM, October 2026); on foot, head west along Broadway or Demonbreun Street
By bike Nashville BCycle e-bikes run 24/7; a single ride costs $1 to unlock plus 45 cents a minute, and a day pass is $23

Things That Affect the Walk

  1. The interstates. The I-65 and I-40 curve forms the south and west edges, separated from the neighborhood by a thin strip of green space; plan the crossing on a map if you are walking on toward 12 South or Midtown.
  2. Evening plans. If you are heading from dinner in the Gulch to the honky-tonks, the mile east along Broadway is the direct route; rideshare is the alternative for a late return.
  3. Score sites. Walk Score publishes neighborhood scores; check walkscore.com for the Gulch’s current number.

What is inside the neighborhood is in what the Gulch is, and how an evening there compares with one on Broadway is in how the Gulch is different from Broadway.
