Is The Gulch Good for Families?

The Gulch works for families with some caveats. It is designed as an urban neighborhood for young professionals, not as a family destination, but several specific attributes make it more functional than its reputation suggests.

For visiting families:

The wings mural at 302 11th Avenue South is one of the most kid-friendly attractions in Nashville. There is a small-scale set of wings at the base of the mural specifically sized for children and dogs. Kids enjoy the interactivity. The surrounding streets are pedestrian-friendly and walkable, which makes moving around with children easier than in the car-dependent parts of Nashville.

The Frist Art Museum on the northern edge of the Gulch at 919 Broadway has rotating exhibits and family programming. It is one of Nashville’s better museums for mixed-age groups.

The food options accommodate families adequately. Emmy Squared pizza is approachable for kids. Turnip Truck Urban Fare works for parents who want something lighter. Biscuit Love, while often crowded, is kid-tolerant. The higher-end restaurants like Catbird and Sushi Bar are clearly not family dinner territory.

For families considering the Gulch as a neighborhood:

It is not designed for families with young children. The neighborhood is 91 acres of mixed-use development with no parks larger than Noble Park, a small pocket park. There are no single-family homes. All housing is apartments and condos. The Gulch Business Improvement District notes that 31 of the neighborhood’s 503 households have children, a very low percentage. The school options nearby are part of Metro Nashville Public Schools.

The neighborhood is physically safe and the street-level environment is maintained. But children need space, and the Gulch does not provide it. Families who visit Nashville and choose to stay in the Gulch will find it manageable. Families who move to Nashville are almost universally better served by Germantown, 12 South, or suburban options with more square footage and outdoor access.
