How Many Neighborhoods Does Nashville Have?
- 3 sections

Nashville does not have one fixed number of neighborhoods, because the count depends on whose list you use. Wikipedia’s Nashville article lists 44 neighborhood names. Walk Score’s 2024 ranking of the city’s most walkable neighborhoods includes names that are not on that list, such as Watkins Park, Sunnyside, Greenwood, Eastwood, and Melrose. And some areas, such as Germantown, also have formal historic district boundaries. For a visitor, a dozen or so well-known areas cover nearly every trip.
Why the Lists Disagree
- Different kinds of names. Some names are historic districts with mapped boundaries; Germantown’s historic district, for example, covers about 18 blocks between Jefferson Street, Taylor Street, and 3rd and 8th Avenues North (Wikipedia). Others are older communities, newer developments, or commercial strips.
- Different purposes. A real estate site, a walkability ranking, and an encyclopedia each group streets for their own reasons, so they do not count the same places.
- One government for the whole county. Since 1963, Nashville and Davidson County have had a consolidated metropolitan government, which also includes six smaller municipalities in a two-tier system, and the Metro Council has 35 district members plus five at-large members (Wikipedia). Council districts and neighborhood names are separate maps.
The Two Lists Side by Side
| Source | What it lists | Count |
|---|---|---|
| Wikipedia's Nashville article, "Neighborhoods" section, read October 24, 2026 | from 12South, Antioch, and Belle Meade to The Nations, Whites Creek, and West Nashville | 44 names |
| Apartment Guide's Walk Score ranking, March 2024 | the ten most walkable neighborhoods, from East End to Melrose | 10 names, 5 of them not on the Wikipedia list |
The Walk Score list is in which Nashville neighborhoods are walkable.
The Areas a Visitor Needs to Know
For a trip, you can work with a short set: downtown and Lower Broadway, SoBro, the Gulch, Midtown and the area around Vanderbilt and Belmont, Hillsboro Village, 12 South, Germantown, East Nashville and its smaller neighborhoods such as Five Points and Lockeland Springs, Music Row, the Nations, Green Hills, and the Music Valley area around the Opry. How they compare as a place to stay is in what neighborhood to stay in, and how they fit on the map is in the layout of Nashville.
When someone names a neighborhood, ask for the street or the nearest landmark; that tells you more than the name.
