There is no official definition. For a breakfast that feels local, go to one of the city’s long-running Southern kitchens built around biscuits. The Loveless Cafe began in 1951, when Lon and Annie Loveless started serving made-from-scratch fried chicken and biscuits out of their home just west of Nashville. It still sells its biscuit mix and preserves (Loveless Cafe). In Hillsboro Village, the Pancake Pantry has served breakfast since 1961 and opens at 6 a.m. (Pancake Pantry). A newer option is Biscuit Love, which started in 2012 as a food truck and now has restaurants in the Gulch, Hillsboro Village, and Berry Farms (Biscuit Love).

Planning Breakfast

  1. Go early on weekends; waits are covered in the best brunch in Nashville.
  2. Try a meat-and-three later for lunch; see what foods Nashville is known for besides hot chicken.
  3. Check hours, since they change by location and day.
