Nashville is a casual city: jeans, a decent top, and comfortable shoes work for the honky-tonks on Broadway, casual restaurants, and the big music venues. The Grand Ole Opry, for example, says it has no formal dress code and that its audience wears “everything from faded jeans to business suits”. Dress up a notch for fine-dining reservations, cocktail lounges, and dressier shows, and check the rules of any specific bar or club that posts its own policy.

What to Wear Where

Where What works
Lower Broadway honky-tonks Casual: jeans or shorts, a shirt with sleeves or a casual top, closed-toe shoes
Grand Ole Opry and Ryman shows Anything from jeans to dressier outfits; the Opry has no formal dress code (Opry House FAQ)
Neighborhood bars (East Nashville, Germantown, the Gulch) Casual to smart casual
Fine dining and upscale cocktail bars Smart casual; check the restaurant's website when you book
Daytime sightseeing Comfortable walking clothes and shoes

The Opry’s dress policy is in its Opry House FAQ.

Bars With Their Own Rules

Some bars and lounges set their own dress policies, for example rules about athletic wear, sleeveless undershirts, or beachwear. Policies change and are enforced at the door, so if you are headed to a particular club or rooftop lounge, read its website or call ahead. When in doubt, a shirt with sleeves and real shoes (not flip-flops) avoids nearly every problem.

Boots and Hats

Cowboy boots and hats are welcome nearly everywhere and expected nowhere. Buying a pair during the trip is part of the fun for some visitors. If you do, wear new boots for the evening rather than for a full day of walking.

Dress for the Weather

What you wear matters more for the season than for the venue:

  • Summer: July highs average about 91°F under NOAA’s 1991 to 2020 normals, so breathable fabrics and a hat for daytime.
  • Winter: January lows average about 30°F; bring a warm coat for evenings between bars.
  • Spring and fall: layers, since temperatures can swing widely in one day.

A Note on Venue Rules Beyond Clothing

Venues also set rules on bags, cameras, and outside drinks. The Grand Ole Opry House, for instance, does not allow video cameras, tripods, iPads, or audio recorders, and does not allow outside food or beverages, including water (Opry House FAQ). Check the policy page of any arena or theater before you go.
