What Is the Tipping Culture in Nashville?

Nashville tips like the rest of the United States, with one local twist: the tip bucket for honky-tonk bands. The wage rules are federal. Tennessee has no state minimum wage law, so employers follow the Fair Labor Standards Act. Under it, the minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, and an employer may pay tipped workers a cash wage as low as $2.13 an hour, counting up to $5.12 of tips toward the minimum. A tipped employee is someone who earns more than $30 a month in tips (U.S. Department of Labor). That is why a server’s pay depends heavily on tips. For a national benchmark, Bankrate’s survey published June 4, 2025 found that 70 percent of Americans always tip sit-down restaurant servers, and 35 percent typically tip at least 20 percent (Bankrate). The honky-tonk part is different. The Associated Press reported in 2019 that “most venues pay musicians like other service staff”, meaning low base pay that they supplement with tips or by selling CDs (AP via KATV).

Tipping on Broadway
- Tip the band if you stay for the music. In the 2019 AP report, Nashville musicians asked visitors to remember that “it is common courtesy to tip the band”.
- Know what is at stake. A musician duo in the same report described earnings ranging from $20 in tips on a slow day to $1,000 to $1,500 each in summer with generous tippers. During breaks, they worked the crowd with a tip jar.
- Tip the bartender too; a bartender who earns more than $30 a month in tips falls under the same federal tipped-wage rule.
Research on this economy is ongoing. A 2025 Vanderbilt dissertation by Adam Kaelin Schoenbachler studied musicians and bartenders on Honky-Tonk Row over 22 months (Vanderbilt). The full night-out cost, tips included, is in the average cost of a Nashville trip.
