Downtown Nashville is the city’s core on the Cumberland River: Lower Broadway’s honky-tonks, the Ryman, the Country Music Hall of Fame, Bridgestone Arena, and the Music City Center, all within a few blocks. Midtown lies west of it, toward Vanderbilt University and the Vanderbilt medical campus, and takes in Music Row, the rectangle between 16th and 17th Avenues South where labels, publishers, booking agencies, and studios work. For a visitor, downtown is where the shows and landmarks are; Midtown is a short ride away for the music business district, Vanderbilt, and Centennial Park.

How Music Row Began
Owen and Harold Bradley opened a studio in a Quonset hut on 16th Avenue South, becoming the first business on Music Row in 1954, and publishing firms followed, according to the Tennessee Encyclopedia. Today the area looks like a neighborhood of houses and a few office buildings, which surprises some visitors, but the encyclopedia calls it the heartbeat of Nashville’s music infrastructure.
Which One to Base Yourself In
If your trip centers on Broadway shows and the downtown landmarks, stay downtown. If you are visiting Vanderbilt or want a quieter base with a short ride to downtown, Midtown works. Both are compared with the other neighborhoods in what neighborhood to stay in, and the map in the layout of Nashville.
